Is China Going Green? -- Part II
A few weeks back we blogged (here) about how, in response to citizen pressure, the Chinese government was starting to make noises about stepping up its environmental enforcement. China Digital Times posted today about a just issued Chinese government report acknowleding the environmental impact of unrestrained industrialization and pledging to maintain "a balance between economic and social development and the environment over the next 15 years." This post has a number of good links on this issue, including a Wall Street Journal article on how Chinese pollution affects the air on the United States' West Coast.
Foreign companies will be affected by China's greening in two very different ways. First, there is a huge need in China right now for experienced, technologically advanced environmental services firms, particularly outside Shanghai. Companies are being shut down in large part because they lack environmentally sound options. Second, foreign manufacturers will need to become more cognizant of China's current and proposed environmental laws. We will be monitoring and blogging on implementation of these new, more stringent, policies.
